Civita di Bagnoregio: a breath suspended in the clouds

There is a moment, along the bridge leading to Civita di Bagnoregio, when time seems to slow down.
The wind rises from the valley of the calanchi, the clouds flow low and the noise of the world remains behind. It is there that one understands why this village perched in the heart of Tuscia is called “the dying city” a name that speaks not of ending, but of remaining.
Civita can only be reached on foot, crossing a walkway that cuts through the gorge below as a symbolic boundary between present and past. Once you pass through the entrance arch, you enter another dimension: tufa stones gilded by the sun, narrow streets climbing between old houses, flowered balconies and silences that tell stories.
Despite its small size and fragile terrain, Civita is alive.
The craft workshops, small restaurants and few inhabited houses keep intact the soul of a place that has never given up. Here, life flows slowly, authentically, measuredly, as if every gesture were an act of respect towards the land that sustains the village and towards the discreet beauty that surrounds it.
I walked along the stone alleys, observing the small details: the time-worn gates, the coloured shutters, the gravity-defying flowers. You can admire medieval buildings and Renaissance palaces showing what is typical of the architecture of the Viterbo area in medieval times, such as loggias and external staircases called profferli, courtyards and small arches.
The view of the valley of the gullies is breathtaking: waves of clay and tuff alternate in a landscape that seems sculpted by time itself. It is a powerful reminder of the precariousness of nature and, at the same time, of its capacity to create wonder. The best place to admire the valley is at the end of the town, from the little terrace renamed “Peppone's Belvedere”.”, a private home that allows tourists access in exchange for a small offering.
Leaving the Borgo, as the sun went down behind the gullies, I felt the lightness of someone who has walked on a place suspended between different eras. The memory of the past, the fatigue of the present and the delicacy of the future coexist here naturally. Civita di Bagnoregio is not just a village to see: it is an experience to breathe, a breath suspended in the clouds.
